Charlotte Dujardin – profile

Charlotte Dujardin (born 1985) is one of the biggest names in international dressage. Dujardin has represented Great Britain at all the major championships and is herself a triple Olympic gold medallist at London 2012 and Rio 2016. She is a former European and World Champion and holds all three dressage world records.

The career took off

Charlotte Dujardin really made her name on the international stage when she reaped double gold at the London 2012 Olympics with the Dutch Warmblood gelding Valegro. Her successful career has since taken off and Dujardin is now the most successful British dressage rider in the history of the sport.

She has won all the major titles and holds to this day all three world dressage records.

The early years

Dujardin grew up in Hertfordshire, England, where she began her career on horseback at the age of two. She competed in ridden shows in England in her early years and had by the age of sixteen won the Horse of the Year competition four times and was a three-time winner of Hickstead.

It was not hard to see what a talented rider Charlotte was and after further encouragement and persistence from her trainer Debbie Thomas, Charlotte began to try her hand at dressage – and the rest is history.

The girl on the dancing horse

Charlotte Dujardin is based at Carl Hilton’s farm in Newent, Gloucestershire, England. The two successful riders have a long-standing professional partnership which started back in 2007 when Charlotte had some lessons with Hester who asked her to stay for a few days to cover for an employee who was on holiday.

She ended up never leaving, and has stayed on the farm with her horses ever since. Carl Hester owns Valegro together with Rowena Luard and Anne Barrott. Carl gave Charlotte a ride on the then five-year-old Valegro in 2007 and trained the pair all the way up to grand prix level in the following years.

Charlotte is currently part of the British National Team and has a number of future dressage horses who are all competing successfully at their respective levels.

Sportswoman of the year

Dujardin was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 New Year Honours – both for services to equestrianism.

She was voted Sportswoman of the Year after winning the FEI championship, the first dressage rider to win that title.
