Tina Lund: It’s nice being back on the team

Farrier and rider: A nice way to be here

“It is a huge experience to be a part of such a big event. And the fact that we can work and ride at the same place works very well”, Jack Ray Nielsen says.

Both Jeff and Jack were farriers at the European Championships in Herning in 2013, so they have experience with big events, but the World Championship is the biggest so far.

“The Europeans was big, but this is even bigger. There is so many horses gathered at the area, also because the championships count four disciplines. Therefore, we are more farriers working than we are used too,” Jack tells.

Same scene as the world’s best

It is an exciting task to work at an event in this caliber and is also very interesting to be a part of it as a rider, and the two farriers experience both, because they also attend the international jumping competitions.

“It is interesting to ride among the world’s best rider. We participate in the 2- and 3-star classes and will ride both weeks while we are here. Next week we really get the chance to take in a lot, when the championship riders will train and warm up at the same area as us”, says Jeff Paw Nielsen.

“We have ridden at international shows many times before, but this I something special. The world’s best riders often ride at the normal international shows, but it is only here that all the best riders are gathered at the same time”, Jack adds.

Shoes horses from all over the world

Jack and Jeff work daily as farriers in their own company and they know a lot of the Danish riders from their work or from past shows, but here they will also shoe horses from India or another country from far away.

“It is a little fun, that you can shoe horses for so many different nationalities and in that way meet people from all around the world. Some of the nation’s brings their own farriers, but there is also a lot that depends on our help inside all the four disciplines represented here”, Jack says.

“Now we only need to be farrier at an Olympic to have done all the big type of shows. If Casper and Jens who stands behind Herning2022 one day get the chance to be a part of the equestrian part of the Olympics we will fore sure be ready to help”, Jeff adds with a big smile.

The farrier team at Herning2022 is led by Mustad Hoofcare Group. Mustad Hoofcare Group is founded in Norway and is the world’s biggest producer of hoof care products and they have been in the market for 190 years. All the farrier team, including Jeff and Jack, works from stations placed at different spots on the venue, and then they have the Mustad Farrier Corner, which have a farrier’s smithy, to treatment boxes and a lounge area.

Dutch team in dressage lead

The first day of Grand Prix Dressage and the Team Championship has brought in the crowds to the ECCO FEI World Championship in Herning. To huge applause and enthusiastic cheering, the best team riders did the final passage line up to do a final salute in front of judge at C Mr Christof Umbach (LUX).

First rider of the day to really rock Stutteri Ask Stadium was Danish rider Nanna Merrald Rasmussen on the national treasure Blue Hors Zack, world championship contender with two Danish riders. She showed the famous breeding stallion to a personal best score of 76.724 percent. The audience followed her all the way from the centre line piaffe and through the passage into a halt where Nanna really gave a wide smile; We did well!

German team debutante Ingrid Klimke started with a strong result on Franziskus giving the reigning world champions a good kickstart. Her teammate and fellow first-time championship rider Benjamin Werndl took elegant classic looker Famoso OLD through an arena filled with atmosphere and managed to nail a personal best. All accompanied by applause down the Centre line. In total team Germany is second.

Second team rider from the home nation Denmark was Carina Cassøe Krüth on the beautiful mare Heiline’s Danciera did a great job and took home 76.863 to add to the team score. Although it did not make them over night leader it is strong to have a drop score of over 76 percent.
“It is a combination of several years of training and building up expectations to this event. I feel that a lot of things have come together in the last months”, said a very pleased and happy Carina Cassøe Krüth.

The most impressive ride of the day making the Netherlands the over-night leader was last year’s fastest rising star on the dressage scene – Dinja van Liere on the beautiful and elegant stallion Hermès. They entered the arena and performed beautifully in the Stutteri Ask Stadium showing off the stallions rhythmic piaffe and beautiful tempis. Together with Dinja van Liere the bay stallion, by the same sire as the Olympic champion TSF Dalera BB, they scored 78,835 percent.
“Hermes gave me a good feeling even if I was nervous. He is so talented with piaffe and passage although we today had a few things that of course can be improved. I really look forward to showing again on Monday”, said a relieved and proud Dinja van Liere.

The competition about the team medals continues on Sunday in the Blue Hors FEI World Dressage Team Championship Grand Prix.

On the start list for Saturday was initially 46 combinations with 19 teams in the line-up. The Australian rider Mary Hanna had to withdraw ahead of the competition. With three riders still on the team Australia is continuing as a team. Two riders were eliminated during or after their ride by the judges or at tack control.

The competition is on!

It was game on from the very first minute of today’s competition for the squads competing for medals in the World Championship in Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning. The very first team in the arena in the first round of compulsories was the team from France, who are one of the favorites to take a medal with them home from Denmark and maybe reclaim the world championship they won back in 2016 in Le Mans.

And they started out strong with an overall score of 8.086 after a very nice round of compulsories, leaving no doubt, that they are here to win.
“It’s always a bit hard to be the first team to open the competition. But I think we did a good job, overall, no major mistakes and the score is good, and the horse was calm in the arena. It gives confidence going into the freestyle on Monday”, team member Lambert Leclezio said after the team’s performance in the grand setting in Boxen.

Germany is very close
Team Germany is eager to hold on to their gold medal for another year and did a really good job, with lunger Patrick Looser being on a bit of work with the team horse, Calidor 10, who was not as excited about the venue as the vaulters.
There was a little bit of insecurity in some of the exercises, but the team still managed to give France a run for their money scoring just a little shy of 8 in total with an overall score of 7.940.
“We did quite good, even though we had a couple of exercises, we would usually do better. But this was a good start, we are happy with the horse and look forward to the freestyle”, said German team member Justin van Gerven.

Today’s battle for the 3rd place
There is a real battle going on for the 3rd place, because three nations are close. At the moment we have Switzerland in the 3rd place with 7.659. But right behind them is Austria with 7.419 and the team from Denmark with 7.329.

Final on Monday
In this championship the Squads only have two rounds to prove their worth to the judges with the second round – the freestyle – on Monday. And the medals are still up for grabs. Austria has had a tough season with a lot of injuries but will do everything they can to move into the top three. And the host country Denmark has been doing a really good job in freestyle in this season, so we are in for an exciting day of finals on Monday.

Stutteri Ask Stadium feels like home

As preparation for Blue Hors FEI World Dressage Team Championship Grand Prix that runs during Saturday and Sunday all riders had scheduled time for familiarization in the arena.

The familiarization is the opportunity to show the dressage horses a completely decked out arena with flowers, decoration, seven judges’ boxes and the very important camera set-up for tv- and streaming broadcasters. Especially the cameras that move and follow the combinations often cause issues the first time a bit unexperienced horse make the discovery: Yey I am movie star.

After doing conventional warm-up in the area behind the stadium all teams made themselves ready for their given time slot. The teams entered in the same order as they showed their horses for the Horse Inspection and each group had 20 minutes to use as they felt best for their needs. The individual riders went in grouped together as four or five combinations at a time.

So how do you spend 20 minutes of familiarization? Very differently, it turns out, some tested all the gears with Grand Prix movements – others walked around and shared more of a Ferdinand moment, stop, and smell the flowers.

Starts and results

Vaulting starts

“This is exactly the kind of scene, you want, when you want to show vaulting to the world”. Former vaulting world champion, Joanne Eccles, are excited about the vaulting-venue in Jyske Bank Boxen, where the championship-titles either will find a new home or stay where they are over the next five days of competition at the ECCO FEI World Championships. The spectators will be sitting like in an amphitheatre looking down on the arena from three sides.

“This is not just an arena. This is a stage. And it’s brilliant”, Joanne Eccles says.

A show-like feeling
American vaulter, Daniel Janes, agrees with Joanne and is looking very much forward to his first run into the arena tomorrow, in the individual competition for men at 17.30 CET.
“I am really excited about the venue. Even though it is grand, the organisers still managed to create an intimate feeling, when you are in the arena”, he says. “And I really like the lighting, which gives the competition sort of a show-feeling and really puts the sport right in the spotlight”.

Even though the vaulters are used to big championships, it has been a while since they have competed in a setting like the one in Jyske Bank Boxen, and they are all looking forward to the first day of competition.

The puzzle is complete
Even though two horses did not pass horse inspection, all the vaulters will be on the starting lists in the next days. Columbian vaulters Juan Marin Clavijo and Estiven Palacio Hernandes will be competing on a French horse and a Dutch horse. While Belgian female competitor, Lauren Venlerberghe, will be competing on a Danish horse.
It is a special thing for the vaulting world, that you can have the opportunity to borrow a horse from another nation, than your own. And it says a lot about the sport, that it is possible to help each other out, if the vaulters find themselves without a horse.

Fantastic sport in sight
Tomorrow will be the first day of competition for the individuals and squads. And on Sunday the Pas de Deux will have their first day in the arena. Monday is the grand finale for the individuals and the squads before we head into the Nations Cup on Wednesday and the Pas de Deux finals.
