The draw for dressage is done

In front of the many participating nations chef d’Equipe’ and team staff the Danish Ground Jury President Susanne Baarup led the draw for the start order in the Grand Prix de Dressage at the ECCO FEI World Championships.

Baarup shared the task of drawing numbers and nations from pre-prepared bowls with technical delegate Janet Lee Foy (USA). The draw decides the starting order in the team competition held during Saturday and Sunday, Blue Hors FEI World Dressage Team Championship Grand Prix.

19 teams in the dressage competition

The chef d’Equipe’ of the National Federations with a stake in the team competition had prior to the draw handed in the order of go for their riders. In total 19 nations have a team on the start list although three nations only have three combinations, these are Japan, New Zealand and Norway.

When there is no team in place and a combination starts as an individual the draw is conducted according to individual riders ranking. There are many nations represented in the start field with two riders from India and a single rider from Armenia. Highest ranking individual rider is Yvonne Losos de Muñoz with her gelding Aquamarijn, partnering together for the Dominican Republique.

Japan to start

Last year’s Olympic host Japan drew start order number one among the teams while USA will be the last team out with Olympic team medalist Adrienne Lyle on her stallion Salvino as team anchor. The reigning team champions Germany drew their team spot as number 18 and they send out Championship debutante Fredric Wandres with his chestnut Duke of Britain as their last rider to go.

All dressage horses accepted at Herning2022

The mandatory Horse Inspection is the go-ahead sign for participation in the ECCO FEI World Championships starting up with arena familiarisation at Stutteri Ask Stadium throughout all Friday. The result is used for the draw of the start order taking place at 14.30 Friday afternoon.

The participating horses were shown by their riders with some exceptions, a few stallions had their groom holding the reins and showing wearing a helmet for safety. The horse inspection was mostly a calm and easy affair but as it tends to be at most events, some horses tend to know what is awaiting. All that energy can be a bit tricky to focus on a straight line as some of the riders got to experience.

The home nation Denmark had four very energized horses with the exception for Vamos Amigos shown by Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour. He trotted up, cool as a cucumber with perfect behavior. All Danish horses were accepted.

The reigning champions as gold medalists from the FEI World Championships in Tryon is Team Germany. They started out with Ingrid Klimke and her stallion Franziskus, both on the national team for the first time. Klimke is champion many times over in different championships – as an eventer. The German team has two more debutants in team members Fredric Wandres and Benjamin Werndl. Fourth member is Isabell Werth, the reigning individual champion from Tryon in 2018, now presenting her latest championship horse DSP Quantaz.

A handful of horses had to be presented more than once but after 94 inspected dressage horses, all received the much sought after and appreciated: Accepted.

Note. One of the horses from New Zealand was not shown at this morning’s horse inspection. The team still has the possibility to show the horse, if possible due to health status, at a re-inspection Saturday morning.

Behind the scenes at Herning2022: Strike a pose

Within the stable area, in a calm spot on the side of two warm-up arenas, the FEI media team has built a studio with a green screen, lights and all necessary equipment to capture the essence of each participant. It takes a big green screen to accommodate a horse in full and the athletes arrive in full competition gear for their photo, meaning tails with all the ornaments from previous achievements.

The photographers Mehmet Akdag and Jonas Franke has several people to help out. It is not always an easy task to make horses “smile” for the camera – meaning prick their ears forward and get that attentive look on their face. One assistant plays a sound, a horse neighing is the most popular one giving the best result. The athletes are much easier, very aware of how important it is to look their best – after all, this photo will be shown for millions of viewers while streamed and broadcasted for the world.

All day and for several days the riders and their horse queue up as well as officials, chef d’Equipe’ and team veterinaries. Outside the temporary photo studio, the horses can have a snack of grass or just check-out teammates or the competition.

The end result is photos, cleared of background and surroundings, used on the big screens in the arena presenting each rider and horse combination. The broadcast production teams also use the photos in different ways.

National Federations join forces with Herning2022 by offsetting CO2-emissions

Herning2022 has turned the approach to sustainability upside down. Instead of apologising for the CO2-emissions that such an event unavoidably will emit, the focus is on putting a positive imprint on the world.

To inspire and include the 50 National Federations participating in the FEI World Championships, they have all been invited to help offset the event and support the green transition by supporting a sustainable project chosen by Herning2022 and its partner First Climate.

– We want to create lasting positive impacts, and we can’t do that alone. We are very happy to see, that so many of the National Federations are supporting us in this agenda, and we are proud to feature them on our different channels and acknowledge their commitment when they join us in our ambition to make this event more sustainable, says Jens Trabjerg, one of the Organisers.

National Federations are a part of the solution

It is voluntary whether the National Federations will join, but there has been great interest, and the Federations can join right up until the last competitions have been completed.

– This is our planet, and we must all be a part of the solution. We are so grateful for the support and backing we have received for this initiative. Every day new federations register Jens Trabjerg says.

The climate protection project supported by Herning2022 is a wind power project in Northwestern Turkey. The wind farm is located in the hills along the Marmara Sea coast, an area with ideal conditions for sustainable electricity generation from wind power. The project has 35 wind turbines that provide more than 100,000 people per year with clean electricity. The project has been certified by the internationally recognized Gold Standard.

Herning2022 is the contracting partner and will provide each National Federation with a certificate testifying that they have contributed to compensation of the CO2-emissions from the World Championships.

Visitors and spectators can join

The project has been chosen by Herning2022 and First Climate, which is a leading global provider of carbon management and green energy services for corporate and public sector clients. They develop, finance, and source verified emission reduction projects around the globe to assist companies in reducing their carbon footprint.

– We are delighted to work with such a large-scale sporting event, particularly because Herning2022 set very precise sustainability goals from day one. We appreciate the Herning2022 organizers’ strong commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and working on many different sustainable solutions. It shows that everybody can take small steps and make a difference, Laura Ann Lüdtke, First Climate, says.

At Herning2022 it is possible to meet First Climate.

– As a first in events, we offer our guests the possibility to compensate for their transport to the event. They just visit First Climate in Solution Square and follow their instructions, Jens Trabjerg says.

Solution Square is an area in EquiPark – the event area – dedicated to green solutions.

– We hope that it can create even more of a “ripple effect” as part of our ambition – both for the individuals, nations and for future event organisers.

Facts about sustainability at Herning2022

ECCO FEI World Championships Herning – Denmark 2022 will be held from 6 to 14 August 2022.

There will be competitions in four disciplines: Dressage, Jumping, Para-Dressage, and Vaulting.

The Organising Committee behind the Championships in addition to VM Herning 2022 ApS, are also the public partners, Sport Event Denmark, Herning Municipality, and Dansk Ride Forbund (Danish Riding Association).

Herning2022 works with sustainability on several levels:

Ambition

Herning2022 will create a new benchmark for sustainability at major sporting events.

3 principles of sustainability

  1. Seek positive ripple effects
  2. Think circular
  3. Engage all suppliers in a dialogue on sustainability.

Examples of initiatives

  • Easily accessible off-setting solutions for the participants of these World Championships, and as inspiration for future sports events
  • Collaboration with MCH Exhibition Herning on waste management and sorting (10 fractions) and catering
  • Materials are rented to the extent it is possible. Many of the things produced for the event will be used by riding schools to secure a circular afterlife.
  • Judge towers are made of recycled and/or FSC-certified wood in collaboration with a local production school and are guaranteed an after-life
  • The World Championship Forest as a 21-acre permanent legacy for Herning2022
